FEMALE GENITAL PIERCING - TYPES

Inner & Outer Labia:   The origins of labia piercings are much the same as for the male foreskin - as a means of imposing chastity through the practice of infibulation. A ring or similar device is used to hold the labia together, closing the entrance to the vagina preventing the wearer from having intercourse and/or accessing the clitoris for stimulation. This practice has some attractions to aficionados of Bondage & Discipline scenes where such restraint can be very erotic.

Labia piercings are also very decorative and can be done singularly or in many pairs, depending on your anatomy. They are often placed higher than the vaginal entry to maximise stimulation to the clitoral area and minimise discomfort during penetration.

Rings and Circular Barbells are very popular in labia piercings, although a range of novelty jewellery, including padlocks (working and non-working models!) are available! The addition of weights to healed labia piercings can also be very erotic and increase the sensitivity of the area.

Piercings of the inner labia tend to heal faster than the outer labia due to the different tissue types. The inner labia has a more profuse blood supply that tends to support rapid healing.

The Clitoris:   Piercing of the clitoris can provide intense sexual stimulation for a woman. Some find this piercing amazing and others can find its effects make the clitoris too sensitive. However, there are many women whose clitoris is not large enough to safely pierce and piercing of the clitoris when it is too small may result in a decreased sensation, so it is advisable to seek the opinion of a very experienced piercer before considering this option.

Rings and small barbells are the most common types of jewellery used for this piercing.

The Clitoral Hood:  This is by far the most popular genital piercing for women. The piercing is made through the loose tissue that covers the urethra and clitoris. Correctly placed it can provide extra clitoral stimulation during intercourse as well as being visually erotic. Many women also comment on its usefulness as a marker for the, sometimes, elusive clitoris during foreplay. There are two ways of piercing the clitoral hood - horizontally or vertically..

Horizontal Hood Piercing -  Horizontal hood piercing is most commonly done with a beaded ring and placed so that the bead rests either on the clitoris itself or on the hood where it covers the clitoris. This depends on your anatomy and personal preference. The friction of the bead on the clitoris provides the extra stimulation during intercourse or whenever pressure is applied to this area. Horizontal hood piercing is most effective when the clitoris is exposed or sits high under the clitoral hood so that there is minimal distance between the bead and the clitoris. If your clitoris is deep and requires more pressure to achieve sensation, then a vertical hood piercing is recommended.

Vertical Hood Piercing -  With a vertical hood piercing, the jewellery is placed vertically so that the bead or ball sits up under the clitoral hood to encourage direct contact with the clitoris. The pressure created by the ball during stimulation can be very sensual and is particularly suited to women with a deep clitoris and/or large labia. While beaded rings can be used in a vertical piercing, better results are often achieved through the use of a small curved or straight barbell.

More than any other body piercing, correct placement of either a vertical or horizontal clitoral hood piercing is critical to its success, so make sure you consult an experienced piercer before having one done.

Other Female Genital Piercings

Whilst the piercings listed above are the most common female genital piercings performed, there are often new piercings being developed.   Two genital piercings that a relative newcomers are the Fourchette and  Triangle piercings

The Fourchette:  The Fourchette is placed at the base of the vaginal entrance where a thin 'lip' of skin exists connecting to the perineum. Placement of a ring in this area can provide some erotic sensation, but because of its position and the pressures that can be put on it during intercourse, healing can be difficult and it is not unusual for these piercings to reject.

The Triangle:  The Triangle piercing is a deep piercing behind the clitoris which can provide intense and extremely pleasurable stimulation to the back of the clitoris. Women cannot usually achieve this type of sensation i.e. usually stimulation is achieved via the front and sides, and therefore this piercing is quite desirable. However, your anatomy is crucial when deciding whether this piercing would be possible. An examination is necessary before considering this piercing.

Due to the depth of this piercing, healing time is often longer than for other female genital piercings and some discomfort may be experienced during the healing period.

More information regarding risks and healing time will be published in a later issue....
