LET’S MAKE CHAT MORE FUN!!!

Oh, Chat rooms are so much fun… so many things to do… so many people to meet. Yet we can do more!!! If you are currently chatting via a java screen like we have here on sexyads, consider using mIRC as your chat platform instead. This will enable to you play sounds, send files and pictures and even play those annoying popups (the little pictures and/or colored scripts you sometimes see. They can make your chat time just that much more fun.

Welcome to the world of Internet Relay Chat, better known as IRC.

This document is designed to assist you in setting up mIRC (a preferred variation of IRC) to enhance your chat pleasure. Once established you will be able to send, receive, play and hear sounds, play popups (those crazy little drawings you see on your screen), send and receive files and pictures etc with your friends and generally have lots more fun in chat.

These instructions are tailored specifically for use on the sexyads.com server, however the same principles apply to all IRC servers and these set up instructions will work on other servers simply by altering the server and port settings.

First you need to download the software. This is a free download and will take 20-30 minutes. You can get it at www.mirc.com if you want a slightly older version of mIRC or for a jazzier version you can go to www.dansmirc.com. Both work equally well and it is merely and matter of personal preference. There is also acidmax for those that don’t want a script based program. If you are a webTV user you might like to check out the IRC programs for web such as AZTEC (see http://www.irchelp.org/irchelp/misc/webtv.html for full details on IRC in webTV)

Once you have installed the software, you will see several sections for personal details that you are required to fill in (name, nickname, email addy etc), however there are 3 other boxes that you need to put specific things into in order for it to connect you to sexyads.com.

Put the following commands into each of these boxes:

Description: sexyads

Server: irc.sexyads.com

Port: 6969

You are now ready to connect to the sexyads server. Hitting the connect button will take you to the server. Once on a server you need to establish what rooms are available for that particular server. You will notice that there are many rooms listed on the channels box, however these are generic names only and do not exist on all servers. In order to find out what rooms are on the server you have connected to, type in /list (N.B. It is most important that you put in the / first. This is a basic command on all IRC servers for a command to the server). This will bring up a list of the rooms that are open and tell you how many people are in each room. You can then double click on the room you want and you will enter that room, alternatively if you know the name of the room you want, simply type in /join #(room name).

Sounds in mIRC

Now that you are chatting on sexyads using mIRC, we need to extend your enjoyment by enabling sounds on your system.

Following are basic instructions to configure your system to automatically send and receive sounds wavs and MP3’s and to play them, however if you have download from dansmirc you will find most of the configurations have been done for you so you can skip this section, but if you are on the older mIRC 32 version please read on.

I have tried to make these as simple and easy to follow as I could. The simplicity of these instructions by no means is intended to be taken as my opinion of the users computer skills so please don't take it that way.

You do NOT have to be connected to the internet to make these settings just click on your mIRC icon to start it.

The first thing that pops up is the box you use to connect to the server and on the left of that box is a column named Category. You will use that column to make your settings. Make sure that the scroll bar is to the top so the word "Connect" is at the top and it should be highlighted. From there go down the list and find IRC. If there is a + sign next to the word IRC click on the + to expand the IRC folder.

Now find the word Perform under IRC and click on it. A new window should open up. In that window, find the box next to the phrase " On connect, perform these commands " make sure that box is checked. The large white box should be empty so place your pointer in the white box and click, this should put your cursor in the large box.. Now type in each of these commands and hit enter after each one:

/pdcc 999999999 there are 9 9's in that string..don't forget to put the / in front of pdcc..hit enter and type

/perform hit enter..then type

/fsend hit enter again then go back to the column and find the word sounds.

Once again if there is a + next to sounds, click to expand sounds. Now click on the word sounds and in that window make sure that the small box that says "Enable event beeps section" is checked. Ignore the next two small boxes. In the large box in the center named "On Event" make sure DCC Send appears in the box with the down arrow. If it does not, click the down arrow and find DCC Send and click on it to select it. Now make sure there is a mark next to "Play sound" and at the bottom "Beep on query message" and "Beep on message while in buffer" are also marked.

Go back to the Category column and under Sounds click on Requests and make sure ALL the boxes are marked.

Now go back to the column and find "DCC" and click it. You do NOT have to click the + on this one.

In the window that opens when you click "DCC" you will see 3 category boxes:

On Send request, mark: "Auto-get file and" "minimize" a Warning will pop up, click Yes

If Auto-get and file exits, mark: "Ask"

On Chat requests, mark: "Show chat dialog"

Now click on the "OK" button at the bottom of the window to close it. You are almost done so hang in there!!!

You should be on the main mIRC page now. Go to the icon bar and from the left count over 7 icons to the icon with the 2 red dots. If you put your pointer on it, it will say "Remote scripts". Click the icon and in the window that opens find the tab named "Remote" and make sure it is highlighted. If it is not click on the tab to highlight and open it.

Go to the top left corner of the window, find "File" click on it and select "New". The large white box in the center of the window will be blank now with a cursor bar flashing in the upper left corner. Next to the flashing cursor type the following:

on 1:NOSOUND: /msg $nick ! $+ $nick $filename

Note: you can copy and paste to place that line in the blank remote window. If you choose to type it in make sure you type it EXACTLY as you see it making sure the spacing is the same as it appears here then hit enter. Once you have entered that line click on the "OK" button at the bottom of the window to close it then exit out of mIRC.

Ok.. that's it.- you are done now! What should happen the next time you are logged in and someone plays a sound a warning message will pop up, click "OK" . A small box indicating you are receiving the sound will appear next to the box that shows what room your in. The sound file you are receiving will be down loaded right to your sounds folder in mIRC..You don't have to do anything else. Now the next time someone plays that sound file you will hear it.

If you want to play a sound, you need to know the name of the sound file you want to play. There are 2 ways to find out what sounds you have. Checking without leaving mIRC is probably the easiest and I'll explain that one first.

Go to the icon bar and count from the RIGHT to the left 9 icons. When you put your pointer on the icon it will read "DCC Send a file to someone" click that icon and in the long box named "Look in" your mIRC folder should be there. If it is not, click the down arrow in that box and navigate to your mIRC folder. Once you are in your mIRC folder the large white box in the center should show the contents of your mIRC folder. Find the sounds folder and click to open it. In the long box called "Files of type" at the bottom of the window, make sure it reads "All files" If it does not, click the down arrow and find "All files" and click on it. In the large white box you should see the names of your sound files. Each file will have an icon in front of it. If the icon looks like a speaker then it is a "wav" file. If it looks like a musical note then it is a "mid" file. It is important to remember what type of sound file these icons indicate. Find the sound you want to play and write it down or remember its name. When you have the sound file you want, click on the cancel button to return to your main window. I'll tell you how to play that sound file later on.

The second way to find the names of your files is to leave mIRC and go to your desktop. From your desktop find the "My Computer" icon and click on it. Then select your hard drive icon and click it. Navigate to your mIRC folder and open it then find your sounds folder and open it. When the sounds file is open you'll see the same icons and names as you did when you looked at your sounds from mIRC. Remember or write down the file you want to play making note of the icon type then return to mIRC.

To play a sound when your in mirc, enter this command in the box you normally type in and hit enter:

/sound filename.wav for the files with the speaker or type

/sound filename.mid for the files with the musical note

type the name of the file where I typed "filename" and don't forget to put the / in front of the word sound.

You will have noticed that your system can automatically grab sound wavs that people play. If you do not wish to receive anymore type in /remote off and likewise /remote on to re-activate it.

The only other thing you may like to consider doing on mIRC is to register your nickname on the server. This affords you protection against anyone using or misusing your nickname.

To do this, in the bar where you type your messages to the room put in the following:

/msg nickserv register (password) (email address)

Do NOT put in the brackets of course, just your password and email addy where indicated. On your status screen it will tell you whether your registration has been successful or whether someone already has that nick registered. If successful, I would then suggest you put in the following command as well:

/ns set kill on

On sexyads this will give anyone attempting to use your nickname 60 seconds to change their name or it will automatically change them to “Guest”. Some servers actually kick the person off if they do not change it.

The only disadvantage to having your nick registered is that each time you come onto the server it will ask for your password at which point you need to type in :

/msg nickserv identify (password)

However, we can also make that easier too.

Click on the top left button market File and go down to IRC, if that has an + in front of it, click on the + to expand and go to Options and then down to the section marked Perform. You will recall we were at this box earlier in the sounds instructions.

Into the box that opens, type the following:

/msg nickserv identify (password) … and hit enter (again.. no brackets.. just the password)

Then ensure the box at the top marked “perform on connect” is ticked and click on OK.

Next time you enter mIRC it will automatically recognize your nickname. However you should be aware that if you regularly change nicks the server may ask you to identify again.

OK!!! You are done!!!!

That should do it… your good to go. Like I said I have tried to make this as easy as possible. If you have any problems or questions PLEASE let me know so I can correct it. Thanks for your patience and I hope this works for you.

IRC can greatly enhance your chat fun. You will always find someone in the room that can help you if you need any further help.

See you in chat!
