My
Life as a Stripper
SAG: Hi Fawnia, how did you get
started as a stripper?
Fawnia: There was a girl
from high school that I took dancing lessons from and I heard
she was a stripper. I checked it out and watched her sprawl
into the splits across the dance floor. Little did I
know that in a short time I'd be joining her.
SAG: Before you started stripping,
did you have a negative attitude toward the profession?
Fawnia: I'd only been to the
strip club 3 days before I started dancing, so I didn't have
much of an opinion. No matter what you think about
strippers, nobody can know what it's like until you've been
out there on that floor.
SAG: Ok, what's it like?
Did you ever feel degraded?
Fawnia: I was only an exotic
dancer, never a prostitute like some of the girls are.
For me it was business and I was there to earn as much money
as I could make.
SAG: How old were you when
you started stripping?
Fawnia: I started on my 19th
birthday in Victoria, BC, Canada. I needed money badly
and was told I had a great body and could make some easy
money. The truth is, it's not easy money, you have to
really work hard.
SAG: How did you get your
first job?
Fawnia: I found an agent in
Vancouver who thought I had a good chance at a starting
position and within 3 days I was employed.
SAG: How did you learn how to do the stripping and
dancing?
Fawnia: I'd taken dancing
lessons all through high school, but to learn to strip I
watched as many dancers as I could possibly find and took from
them all I needed to be successful.
SAG: Were you successful?
Fawnia: Yes, I was a
featured dancer and earned more money and had to work less
hours than the other girls. I was named Western Canada's Top
Exotic Dancer.
SAG: Did you ever feel you'd
made a bad choice for yourself?
Fawnia: It was hard on my
family at first, but I always knew it was right for me.
I loved it. I could travel, earn lots of money, have a toned
body, meet new people and have a great time. I felt free and I
was in control. I did a bit of modeling in my off hours. Men
were mine, yet I was NOT theirs. I could arouse them
with my body but they couldn't touch me. It was power.
It was my career and I took it very seriously.
SAG: How did the men treat you?
Fawnia: I was always treated
with respect. I was an exotic dancer, so I never had to
give lap dances. I think the girls that do those are
made to feel really trashy.
SAG: Did men try to pick you
up?
Fawnia: Oh yes, but I had a
boyfriend from the time I began dancing, so I was never
interested. I felt that my personal life was outside the
club.
SAG: How long was your
career as a dancer?
Fawnia: I lasted nearly two
years. I know it's not a long time, but I met a man who
wanted to "save me" from "all that" and I listened to him and
not to my inner voice. I still regret quitting.
SAG: What did you miss most?
Fawnia: I loved being on
stage, I loved being able to arouse men so they each thought I
was coming on to them even though there were many in the
audience. I missed the sexy costumes and the general sexy
feeling that dancing allows you to have.
SAG: So how have you coped
with these feelings?
Fawnia: I've made a video
tape to teach women how to dance sexy for their men.
SAG: Is it hard?
Fawnia: LOL, it's not hard
til she starts dancing! Seriously, any woman can dance
sexy for her man. She needs to find something to wear
that will feel good to her and arouse him and then follow the
simple instructions. He'll love her for trying.
SAG: What response have you
received from your video?
Fawnia: I've found that new
dancers are buying it to help them get a leg up in the
business. They can watch my tape at home and try some of
the moves. It's much easier than I had it when I watched
it in the club and then tried to remember all the moves later
when I was at home.
SAG: If someone were
interested in getting information on your video, where could
they contact you?
